What Is a Wug Blanket — and Why Pony Owners Love Them
If you’ve spent time around the barn, you may have heard the term “wug” and wondered what it means. In the equestrian world, a wug refers to a blanket with a high-cut neck, designed by Horseware Ireland. These blankets come in a range of weights — 0g, 100g, and 250g — making it easy to choose the right level of warmth for your pony.
The concept is brilliant — this unique cut offers extra neck coverage that helps protect horses and ponies from wind and rain. Traditional blankets often leave the neck and chest area exposed, allowing moisture to seep in when animals are turned out in wet or blustery weather. The wug design helps solve that problem beautifully.
But that’s not all! The wug’s fit makes it especially well-suited for younger or narrower ponies. Regular blankets often have neck openings that are too large for immature builds, leading to the shoulder slipping out or rubbing. The wug’s V-front closure prevents this, providing a more secure, comfortable fit. It also reduces pressure on the withers — a big plus for preventing rubs or sore spots. Crossed surcingles and a tail cord keep everything in place during turnout.
Another reason we love wugs: they’re perfect for fluctuating temperatures. Like a blanket with a full neck cover, a wug offers great protection from the elements — but without the risk of overheating. We use them for our senior ponies who live outdoors full-time, knowing they’re warm, dry, and comfortable in changing weather conditions.
