What Weight Pony Blanket Do You Need?
Blanket season is quickly approaching, and the major manufacturers are offering many new weights and styles of clothing for ponies, giving owners lots of choices. We've been selling pony blankets for 25 years and have never seen such a wide selection available before. The attached chart is a guideline that shows what weight blanket (or sheet) is needed at various temperatures. This is a guideline only! Many factors can contribute to what clothing is best suited for your pony, and some are discussed below. Another expanded innovation now offered for ponies is a selection of blanket liners from more than one manufacturer. This gives you even more flexibility in your pony blanket choices.
Blanket Weights in Pony Sizes
Ihe most exciting news regarding new pony blanket options for 2025 is the number of weights available. Both Horseware and Weatherbeeta are now offering a wider selection of weights (the amount of fill) for their pony blankets, that's specified in grams (g). This year, there's a choice of 0g (a turnout sheet), 50g, 100g, 200g, 220g, 225g, 250g, and 400g. Additionally, many sheets and blankets are liner compatible, and three weights of liners (100g, 200g, and 300g) are available in pony sizes.
Pony Blanket Styles
Blankets and sheets come in a variety of styles including standard neck, combo neck, a blanket with a detachable neck and a blanket with a high neck (Wug). The pony Wug from Horseware has been brought back this year by popular demand. Each of the styles offers a different amount of warmth and protection for a pony. Neck covers (detachable or combo necks) keep a lot of body heat in. A Wug is great for keeping rain or snow off the neck and chest plus it gives a little more warmth than a standard neck. Combos are easy to put on and off but don't offer the flexibility of a detachable neck.
Other Considerations
When deciding what weight blanket to use, you need to consider more than clipped vs unclipped. For example, thin and old ponies may need a little more protection with more fill and possibly a neck cover. The weather can also be a factor in deciding what blanket to use. Wind, ice, rain and snow may require your pony to be more bundled up if they're turned out.
Luckily, there are plenty of options available to keep your pony warm, dry and comfortable no matter where they live and what the weather conditions are!
