A Kimberwick is a curb(leverage) bit. The curb chain prevents the bit from rotating too far in the horse's mouth. When the reins are pulled back, the bit applies pressure to the bars of the mouth, the chin, and the poll. The mullen mouth applies most of the pressure to the bars of themouth and is considered milder than a jointed mouth piece.

The slots in the cheek allow the rein to be placed on the top of the ring for a less severe effect or lower for a stronger result.
